A lone stranger checks into a remote country hotel. Is he looking for peace and solitude or does he have a more sinister agenda? Tormented by an unconventional waiter with an unhealthy desire for pork scratchings, the stranger finds some solace in the eyes of a beautiful girl he meets in the hotel bar. The Renata Road is a psychological enigma that follows the strangers single night in the hotel. Starring CJ de Mooi from BBC's Eggheads, Director Ed Greenberg has created a piece of narrative that actively engages the grey matter and invites the viewer to solve the mystery of the Stranger and his experiences.
The Renata Road is a psychological enigma that follows the events experienced by a lone stranger as he spends a single night in a remote country hotel. Played by CJ de Mooi (BBC2's Eggheads), the stranger has to contend with the unusual behaviour of the hotel's Landlady and waiter, both whom have no intention of allowing him a comfortable stay. Some solace is found however when he locks eyes with another of the hotels guests, played by newcomer Zara Denneny. The pair form an unspoken relationship that appears to soothe the strangers plight and allows him some respite. The waiter on the other hand allows him no such peace and a final confrontation between the pair becomes inevitable. Although it is unclear why the stranger has come to this hotel, there is a strong sense of connectivity between all of the characters and the audience is invited to unravel the mystery. Director Ed Greenberg assures us that the truth is there to be found, "You never deliberately confuse your audience, it is unfair to do so. There is an answer to the conundrum that is The Renata Road, everything is there for a reason and a purpose; the dialogue, the characters, Everything has a purpose and a justification." The Renata Road is a fascinating example of what filmmakers can achieve with a zero budget and a lot of creative talent.
